Visiting TBS for the First Time?

If you are planning to visit Temple B’nai Shalom or attending services for the first time, we are delighted to welcome you. The following information will help you feel more comfortable during your visit.

Can I get a tour of the synagogue?
Yes! To schedule a tour, please call the temple office at 703-764-2901.

Can I speak with the Rabbi?
The Rabbi is often available at the front of the sanctuary after services and at the Oneg Shabbat on Friday nights — a perfect time for a brief introduction and conversation. If you are a member and would like to schedule a longer meeting, please contact the temple office at 703-764-2901.

Is parking available?
Yes, our parking lot has ample space for regular services. For inclement weather, there is a covered drop-off area at the front entrance. Please note: The parking lot is one-way, so follow directional signs when entering and exiting. If you need mobility assistance, please let the office know ahead of time at 703-764-2901.

For High Holy Day Services, volunteer attendants may direct you to alternative parking areas.

Do services start on time?
Absolutely. Services begin on time, so plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early to find a seat comfortably. If you arrive late, an usher may ask you to wait for an appropriate time to enter the sanctuary. Some Friday night services begin with musical meditations, so please enter quietly if this is the case. After the service, we invite you to enjoy refreshments and conversation at the Oneg Shabbat in the social hall.

What should I wear?
Friday night services: Business casual is typical. Men may wear a sweater or jacket (ties are optional); women often wear slacks or skirts. Please avoid blue jeans.

Saturday morning Bar/Bat Mitzvah services: Attire is more formal. Most men and boys wear jackets and ties and women and girls wear slacks and dresses. Kippot and tallit are available at the back of the sanctuary for those who wish to wear them.

What can I expect to take place during the service?
You will be greeted at the door and most likely handed a copy of our prayer book, Mishkan T'filah. If it’s a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, you’ll also receive a Torah Commentary. Sometimes, no prayerbook is needed. Prayers are often projected on screens at the front of the sanctuary. Large-print prayer books and assisted listening devices are available — just ask an usher. The Rabbi will guide the congregation on when to stand and sit. At the end of the service, please return prayer books to the ushers.

If I have any questions, who can I ask?
On Friday nights, Board members (wearing name tags) are available in the lobby, in the sanctuary, and at Oneg. On Saturday mornings, ushers at the rear of the sanctuary are happy to assist you.

What should I do if I have a young child who needs to take a break from the service?
Classroom #9 is equipped with a live video and audio feed of the service. An usher can direct you there. If you are unsure whether your child is being disruptive, it’s best to step out briefly. Please note that hallway noise carries into the sanctuary, so Classroom #9 is the preferred space. We ask that visitors be especially mindful during Bar/Bat Mitzvah services, so the teen leading the service is not distracted.

If you have any additional questions before your visit, please don’t hesitate to call us at 703-764-2901. We look forward to welcoming you to our community!
