Summertime Judaism

Though the pace at Temple B’nai Shalom has slowed down for the summer, we are still your center of Jewish learning and living all months of the year. Sometimes people think there isn’t much to do Jewishly over the summer. But here are some great ideas for things you can do all summer long!
1. Celebrate Shabbat at home. With more relaxed summer nights, why not invite a few friends over for a leisurely Shabbat dinner? Have a Shabbat picnic on Saturday afternoon. Take the time each week to make Shabbat a true day of rest.
2. Come to Summer Shabbat Services. Our Shabbat Evening Services continue all summer long at 7:00pm, through September. Our Shabbat Morning Services continue at Minyan Makers, starting at 9:00am for a light breakfast and 9:30 for the service, usually featuring a Torah reading and study of that week’s Torah portion. Come celebrate Shabbat with your TBS community.
3. Shabbat Services in other cities. Going on a trip this summer? Check out Shabbat services at a congregation wherever you are. There are synagogues just about everywhere. Ask me ahead of time and I’ll be happy to help you make arrangements.
4. Jewish tourist sites. Jewish history and life is so rich that just about anywhere you might go on vacation is bound to have something of Jewish interest. Whether it’s visiting the first Reform temple in the United States (in Charleston, SC), finding the Jews in the Baseball Hall of Fame, or touring medieval synagogues in Spain, there is a lot to see that’s Jewish.
5. Read a Jewish book. Did you know that there are Jewish mystery novels? Jewish science fiction? Jewish adventure books? Whatever genre of reading you plan to do this summer, there are great Jewish authors and Jewish books.
6. Summer Social Action project. The summer is a great time to do social action projects, either as an individual or as a family. Food pantries and pet shelters are always looking for helpers. Or check in with any other organization and find some time to help repair the world.
There are plenty of other ways to continue Jewish living and learning over the summer. What will you do? Let me know – I can’t wait to hear all about it!
